Lucien Agoumé has become the undisputed presence in Sevilla's midfield after starting all four of the club's opening LaLiga EA Sports matches without missing a single minute. The Frenchman, now in his fourth season at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, shares that ever-present status only with goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and defenders Juan Iglesias and Gabriel Suazo.
Sevilla head coach Luis García Plaza has openly praised the midfielder's development this season. "Muy bien, lo estoy viendo muy bien también. Hablo mucho con él." the coach said, as quoted by Marca.
García Plaza also pointed to Agoumé's growth since last season. "Creo que ya terminó bien el año pasado." he added.
Agoumé sits among the top three players in La Liga for interceptions, with 10, trailing only Jon Aramburu and Beñat Gerenabarrena. He ranks second across the whole division in successful tackles, with 11, behind only Manu Sánchez.
The Frenchman has also added 12 clearances, 22 duels won and 10 fouls committed this term. Against Espanyol he was Sevilla's leading player for possession, underlining how central he has become to García Plaza's system thanks to sharper positioning and anticipation.
Agoumé missed last season's opener against Oviedo through suspension but still played seven matches, five as a starter. He is now viewed as one of the leading footballing figures in Sevilla's current squad.
Should he need a rest, the club has alternatives in midfield such as Giorgi Kochorashvili, Youssouf Fofana and Jon Guridi, though none has yet displaced him from the starting eleven. Sevilla, meanwhile, list Rubén Vargas as currently sidelined.
