Sevilla FC observed a minute's silence at their training session on Saturday for the victims of the tragic train crash in Toledo. The Andalusian club issued an official statement of condolence following the accident which has claimed 46 lives and left many injured.
President José María del Nido Carrasco and the entire squad, gathered at the city's sports facility, took part in the moment of reflection before beginning their on-pitch work. The crash involved two high-speed trains, one operated by Renfe and another by Iryo, near Urda on the Madrid-Andalusia railway line, leading to the suspension of traffic between the two regions.
In a statement, the club expressed its sorrow. "Sevilla FC conveys its condolences to the families and friends of the people who lost their lives in the tragic train accident that occurred today in the province of Toledo, and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. May they rest in peace," the entity said.
The incident, which has shocked the country, recalls another rail accident that occurred on January 18 in Adamuz, Córdoba, which also resulted in 46 deaths. Sevilla's gesture comes during a period of national mourning that transcends sport.
Sporting context
The team's gathering takes place amid preparations for their next league fixture. Sevilla, who sit sixth in the standings with 17 points from 10 games, will visit Getafe next Sunday, November 1. The Madrid-based side are currently 17th, making the match an opportunity to pick up points in the fight for European places. The team trails the leaders, Barcelona, by 10 points.
The team managed by Quique Sánchez Flores arrives with confidence after a 2-0 win over Osasuna last Monday 26 October, with goals from Isaac Romero and Félix Correia. However, their form over the last five matches has been mixed, with one win, one draw and three defeats. This run includes a 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid on 18 October and a 3-3 draw with Levante on 12 October. Forward Isaac, with three goals, is the team's top scorer this season, in which Sevilla have both scored and conceded 16 times, leaving them with a goal difference of zero.
Saturday's minute of silence shows the club's social commitment on a day marked by tragedy. The squad resumed their preparations for the trip to Madrid with the memory of the victims firmly in mind.
