Sevilla are stepping up their summer transfer activity. The club is negotiating to sign Atlético Madrid left-back Julio Díaz, according to MARCA sources. The 21-year-old has already made four La Liga appearances this season -including the away game at Sevilla’s Sánchez Pizjuán- and fits the profile Luis García Plaza is looking for.
What changed in the deal?
Just days ago, Díaz was set to join Levante. Reports suggested the club had agreed to pay one million euros for 50% of his rights over four seasons. But Sevilla has stepped in and now leads the race. The left-back has featured around 30 times for Spain’s youth teams and arrives at a crucial moment: Sevilla have scored zero and conceded zero in pre-season, with a 2W-0D-3L record in their last five outings.
Why does Sevilla need Díaz?
Luis García Plaza requires depth on the left flank. Suazo, Oso and Pedrosa are options there, but the futures of the latter two are uncertain. Oso, a homegrown player who broke into the first team late last season, even traveled to Poland to play a friendly with KS Cracovia while his future is decided. Sevilla tried to extend his contract in recent months, but no deal was reached.
Bringing in Díaz would shore up a defense that has conceded just one goal in pre-season. The left-back has La Liga experience -four appearances this season- and his profile matches the team’s style. The club is also negotiating with Evangelos Marinakis, owner of Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest, to finalize the transfer.
What happens next?
Sevilla play their second pre-season friendly this Sunday at 16:00 CET in Poland against KS Cracovia. Talks with Atlético and Díaz’s representatives are intensifying. The league kicks off on August 2, with Sevilla sitting 18th and yet to score or concede in pre-season. Their next official fixture is the August 2 friendly against Utrecht to prepare for the new campaign.
League standing: 18th in La Liga, 0 pts. Last result: Celta Vigo 1-0 Sevilla (2026-05-23).
