Sevilla FC returned to training at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Saturday ahead of their La Liga match against Getafe. The squad had carried out an activation and recovery session in their Madrid hotel gym on Friday before travelling back to Seville.
Manager Luis García Plaza explained the purpose of the special session following the 0-3 Copa del Rey win over Sporting de Hortaleza on Thursday 29 October. "The players who hadn't been playing got minutes and there have been no injuries," the coach said. The aim was to prepare the players who accumulated heavy minutes in the cup match and to activate the rest of the group.
The victory in Hortaleza, with goals from Robbie Ure, Peque and Rubén Vargas, allowed García Plaza to rest regulars like Kike Salas, Suazo and Agoumé. It also provided an opportunity for several young players. "Not only Iker Muñoz, but also Manuel Ángel and Ibra, who also made their debuts." added the manager.
With focus now on the eleventh matchday of La Liga, the team completed their only full session at the Sánchez-Pizjuán at 10:30 on Saturday. This training served to fine-tune the final tactical details before the squad travelled by plane back to Madrid, where they will be based for Sunday's 14:00 kick-off at the Coliseum.
Sevilla approach this fixture from a solid position in the standings, sitting sixth with 17 points after ten games, having recorded five wins, two draws and three losses. The team is on a run of two consecutive victories, adding the cup win to last week's 2-0 league success against Osasuna. Their recent form over the last five league matches reads two wins, one draw and two losses. Their next opponent, Getafe, is in 18th place, making this Sunday 1 November match a good opportunity to continue accumulating points and close the ten-point gap to leaders Barcelona.
On the injury front, Marcao and Miguel Sierra remain confirmed absentees for this trip. The team, which has scored 16 goals and conceded the same number this season, will hope top scorer Isaac Romero, with three goals, can continue providing a cutting edge. Saturday's session at the Sánchez-Pizjuán concluded preparations for a key match in the fight for European positions.
