Sevilla FC returned to training on Tuesday with the focus on the fitness of key players Rubén Vargas and Lucas Stassin. The Andalusian side, fifth in La Liga with 13 points, is preparing for Friday's Trofeo Antonio Puerta against Aston Villa, but the real target is the league restart away at Levante on October 12th.
Vargas, who has only featured in the first league match, continues to struggle with a right knee issue that has bothered him for over a month. The winger did partial work with the group after traveling to Madrid for an additional medical review. His manager, Luis García Plaza, underlined his importance. "If we manage to recover the best version of Rubén, he has to be important for us," the coach said. "He is a player who gives you different things, who is even something of a specialist in the squad."
Meanwhile, striker Lucas Stassin, who established himself as a starter after scoring on his debut against Espanyol, suffered a right long adductor injury that ruled him out of the Barcelona match. The goal is for him to be available for the trip to the Ciutat de Valencia. The team approaches that fixture following a 1-3 home defeat to Barcelona and with a recent form of two wins, one draw, and two losses from their last five outings.
The positive news at the training ground was the return of Kike Salas, who missed the Barcelona game due to physical issues stemming from a minor right knee problem picked up against Deportivo La Coruña. The defender is now training normally. However, six players remain absent on international duty: Odysseas Vlachodimos (Greece), Gabriel Suazo (Chile), Giorgio Kochorashvili (Georgia), Robbie Ure (Scotland), Arouna Sangante (Senegal), and Fran González (Spain U21, already returned due to injury).
Sevilla's next training session is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:30 am. The team aims to consolidate its fifth-place standing against a Levante side currently in 17th position. The Monday, October 12th match is a key opportunity to pick up points in the race for European spots table.
