Youssouf Fofana has already made his mark at Sevilla FC, scoring in the recent defeat to Barcelona (1-3) and joining a growing list of goalscorers. The French midfielder, on loan from AC Milan, became the ninth different player for the club to score in LaLiga 2026/27, a statistic that matches Brighton and Inter Milan for the most diverse scoring sources in Europe's top five leagues.
His arrival late in the summer transfer window, on a loan without a purchase option for which Sevilla paid 1.5 million euros, aimed to revitalise a midfield in need of experience and physicality. At 27 years old and with a CV that includes Euro 2024 and the 2022 World Cup with France, Fofana brings a different profile. Manager Luis García Plaza, while not explicitly requesting him, approved the signing. "It wasn't my request, but when the possibility arose I told them please, yes," the coach explained.
Immediate impact
His goal against Barça, a headed finish in the 19th minute that temporarily put his team ahead, is the most tangible proof of his quick adaptation. Last season in Italy with Milan, he registered two goals and four assists in 33 Serie A matches. At Nervión, he is expected to compete for a place with Lucien Agoumé, Jon Guridi and Giorgi Kochorashvili, able to operate as both a central midfielder and a centre-back. His teammate Guridi has already noted how his presence "has raised the level" of the area.
For Fofana, the objective is clear. "What I hope for first is to rediscover the pleasure of playing. Not much more." the player stated. His arrival comes at a key moment, with the team fifth in the table, eight points off the leader, and with sights set on the fight for Europe.
Sevilla, with 13 points from a possible 21, now faces the international break before visiting Levante on October 12th. That match will be a new opportunity for the 'Fofana effect' to continue adding. The Andalusian side will look to correct a recent patchy run of form (LWWDL) and consolidate its position in the upper reaches of the table.
