Youssouf Fofana, the French midfielder signed by Sevilla FC, made his debut on Friday at the RCDE Stadium in a 1-0 win over Valencia in a La Liga match played on 11 September 2026, and his display was enough to make the fans call him a new idol in Nervion.
Fofana, who joined from AC Milan after the Rossoneri accepted the terms proposed by Sevilla on the final night of the transfer window, started and played 71 minutes despite having had only three training sessions with the squad.
A debut with the numbers to match
The Frenchman recorded three tackles, two interceptions, one aerial duel won and one blocked shot, while completing 29 of 45 passes for 89.7% accuracy, including three long balls and one pass into space. He also had a shot on target and one dribble, figures that show his contribution at both ends of the pitch on his first appearance for Sevilla.
Garcia Plaza explains his management
Head coach Garcia Plaza has explained that a lack of match rhythm, not fitness, limited Fofana's minutes against Valencia. "I don't think Fofana will have problems lasting the full match, he simply lacks games and training." the coach said. The midfielder, who has 25 caps for the French national team and previously played for Monaco and Milan, had not completed a full 90 minutes since 1 February before arriving at Sevilla.
Agoume, the first call after signing
His compatriot Agoume was the first person Fofana called after completing his transfer, and he had also spoken beforehand with Ben Yedder about the club and the city. Agoume has praised the qualities of his new midfield partner. "Everybody knows his qualities. He's a French international." Agoume said.
Fofana's physical presence allowed Garcia Plaza to switch the system to two wingers and two strikers, and his work helped the team win back the ball in advanced areas. Sevilla sit fourth in La Liga with 10 points from 15 available after five games, two points behind leaders Barcelona, and they carry that momentum into their next league fixture on 16 September away to Deportivo La Coruna, currently sixth in the table.
